He worked on his first movie set at the age of 15 as a PA on the low-budget film 'Redboy 13'. He studied cinematography at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Carl graduated with an BFA in Cinema-tography. Carl went on to earn an MA in cinematography at SFA after completing the documentary feature 'East of West'. It was in the SFA film program that he met his wife and partner Betsy.
